Crate Soul Brothers newsletter #102: Obsessed

    Newsflash 23. April 2003

    Dear friends,

it's always a very sad thing to make a tribute show for a great artist who only passed away. And we have this duty too many times. Our next show we will dedicate to Nina Simone who died on Sunday at age 70 and left us with so much excellent recordings of so many different styles. RIP!

Well, what else we can write all after this? We'll keep it short: we just got the feedback from Gav Smith @ Disorient Records that he and Thomas Schumacher really loved our version of Good Life, so quite soon you can listen to the bubblin basslines and off beat drums under the voice of a certain lady called Kaori.

We also had the pleasure lately to make a short mix for the famous Into Somethin' radio show of Munich made by Florian Keller and Theo Thönnessen. The mix was aired last week and you can even find the playlist here. They have been organising the Into Somethin' club nights with Compost-founder Michael Reinboth for 12 years now.

Me, Tibi aka Keyser make a short world tour in the next weeks including a one-week journey in NYC for the first time where finally I can meet some good guys who I only knew trough the internet and also some friends I didn't meet for a long time. You can guess I am rather excited to dig into those dusty crates than to take a look from the Statue of Liberty. But while I collected my wishlist on the web I bumped into a pessimistic writing about the NYC scene:

"Throw them crooked fingers up. Pete and Anthony want to move the whole operation to LA. I'm the only die-hard New Yorker up in here, but you know what? I don't even know why anymore. It's like smoking weed for me - I'm obsessed with what it used to be, with no regards to what the present day reality is. New York isn't New York anymore. We just passed a no smoking law for all restaurants, bars and clubs. No fucking smoking in NYC?! That was alright for pansy-ass California vegans, but New York? Already the rents are so steep that nobody cool can afford to live here, the last time I went to a big club was 8 years ago, you can't buy weed or firecrackers in the street anymore, jumping turnstiles is out of the question, there's no scene whatsoever (unless you can stand the locust invasion of button-down blue shirts and a fabricated magazine trend called "electro-clash") and we are the biggest terrorist target on the planet.... What the fuck do we live here for anyway? It's 4 am,!
35 degrees and the heat is off in our building. At least LA is warm. [...]"
Turntablelab about Tupac - California Love 12"

Anyway, I am sure there is a good scene over there and I am happy to meet some of the guys who are keeping this together including Nickodemus & his friends, Nat Rahav and Tyler Askew.

Keep on being obsessed till the next time!
