    Greetings,

It's a new year and time for lots of new music. A few titles were
actually released in 2002, but to paraphrase a recent ad campaign,
"if you haven't heard it, it's new to you."

From Italy, we'll sample a bit of Nicola Conte's "Jet Sounds
Revisited," featuring some stellar remixes by many of the usual
suspects. Nicola is also responsible for the debut release from
Rosalia De Souza, entitled "Garota Moderna" - a sweet collection of
Brazilian bossa from a lady with a lovely voice.

Jamie O''Dell (aka Jimpster) has been playing around the UK with a
live outfit called The Bays. Jockey Slut magazine released a
mini-album by the band a few months ago and I'm finally getting
around to getting it on the air. Tom Middleton and Shur-I-Kan are
featured players, so you know it's got to be extra good!

A little bird dropped an advance copy of Massive Attack's "100th
Window" in my lap this past weekend and all I can say is yow! 2003
has barely even begun and there's already an entry for one of the
best albums of the year. Guests include Sinead O'Connor, Horace Andy
and Damon Albarn, all of whom contribute nicely to the dark, trippy
vibe. The street date is set for early February.

Shaun Escoffery's self-titled debut was released in November, but I
doubt that anyone outside of the UK has heard it. This is powerful,
modern soul music that's well produced and a natural for the dance
floor. If the originals weren't great enough already, I caught Gilles
Peterson spinning two outstanding remixes - one by Peter Kruder and
another by Jazzanova. Somebody hook me up!

Speaking of Mr. P, "Impressed With Gilles Peterson" is his latest
collection of underground favorites, but this time the spotlight is
on rare British jazz from the '60s. Every track is a joy to listen to
and some of them have fetched top dollar on the collectors' market.
The liner notes are extensive and provide deep background on each of
the artists represented. Amazon UK is currently accepting pre-orders.

If you liked the Philadelphia Experiment, you'll really like the
Detroit Experiment, where the future of Motor City shakes hands with
the past. The line-up of musicians is nothing short of incredible and
includes Marcus Belgrave, Regina Carter, Bennie Maupin, Amp Fiddler,
Geri Allen and Carl Craig. I have a six-song EP, but I hope a full
album is due sometime in the coming months.

New EPs include two forthcoming projects from Vienna's Ecco Chamber:
Lop Nor features some of the city's top jazz musicians groovin' with
some funky riddims, as well as some d&b flava. Albanek's "Walk Away"
sports a minimal broken beat and simple keys, but then the Swell
Session remix opens it up full throttle and turns it into a
    soul-disco anthem.

The new single from Dublex, Inc.("Tocame") is guaranteed to rip up
the dance floor, as is Damn's "African-Scanian Music Continuum
Rerouted" - an Afro funk workout that had me sweating from the moment
I dropped the needle on it. Sweden's Raw Fusion is responsible for
this puppy and four other 12"s in the past year, each one better than
    the last. Watch these guys.

There's plenty more to talk about, but I'm getting ready for a full
day at Macworld, so I'll bid you adieu...

Until next week, ciao for now,
    David
