I think a little perspective is needed here. Comparing a SOUNDTRACK album
with a DANCE album is hardly fair, and if you haven't picked up the Man With
a Movie Camera DVD, you are missing out on the entire experience. I don't
think Mr. Swinscoe set out to make a "grooving" danceable soundtrack. The
Orchestra performing a new score for a classic silent film is (to me,
anyway) the full realization of what the group is capable of. Have you ever
really tried to "groove" to a movie soundtrack? The only reason I even
purchase movie scores these days is to relive a bit of the film, which
happens when I listen to certain musical cues. Ever seen the restored
"Metropolis"? With the restored score? It's a great experience...and I
really think that the CO's new score to "Movie Camera" lets me view the film
in a completely different light, just like the "new" cues for Metropolis.
Besides, who ever said that the Cinematic Orchestra were a dance group?? A
jazz ensemble, maybe, although I think of the group as an amalgamation of
different styles. Also, much of the new score is music taken directly from
the Everyday album, albeit in an extended form. I don't recall anyone here
saying THAT was a bland album. Yes, we are all entitled to our opinions,
but just remember: This soundtrack is not a true album by the group. It's a
soundtrack, and like any movie score, it needs to be married with the visual
elements of the film...but at the same time evoke feelings and memories when
it's heard on its own. Hell, when I listen to the album Every Day, I now
think of the "Movie Camera" film! That wasn't too difficult anyway, since I
have always listened to that album and thought, "Wow, this would have made a
great score to a movie". As for the group's weaknesses performing live, I
already mentioned how they need to utilize vocalists more; audiences seem to
need someone to focus on...and even if the group can't manage that at all
times, I know they can rip out some killer solos. Oh, and by the
way...whenever I'm out spinning Evolution Pt. 2, there is always someone
dancing...so much for not being able to groove, eh?
    Peace

PS - go listen to some old Kenny Barron albums...you'll find some
interesting similarities between his playing style and the Orchestra's.
