STYLIN - Rare grooves, hi-tech jazz and other worldly fusions
Friday afternoons 12-2pm RRR 102.7FM, Melbourne
Live online - http://www.rrr.org.au/index2.html (see below for times)

    Hello all

There was a Robert Baden-Powell who was best known as a British Army General
and founder of the boy scouts. Then there was Roberto Baden-Powell de Aquino
aka Baden Powell, the Brazilian guitarist. Even if you didn't hear last
week's show, I think you can work out which one is of more interest to
Stylin. But interestingly, there is a connection, as our Baden Powell was
given his name because his father was the head of the boy scouts in Brazil.
Anyway, Baden became prominent in the early 60s playing bossa nova, but then
by the time of the mid-60s he was developing a new style which he called
"Afro Sambas". With lyricist Vinicius de Moraes, Baden wrote many classics
in this style including "Berimbau" which I'm sure has featured in an earlier
Trainspotters' Corner. Last week we had "Samba Saravah", a French
interpretation of his "Samba de Bençao", which was included in the
soundtrack of the wonderful 60s film "Un Homme et Une Femme" ("A Man and a
Woman"). The connection with today was "Day to Day" the new single by UK hip
hop producer Richy Pitch, featuring vocals by Apani set to a groove which is
surely based on the guitar of one of the many versions of Baden's tune.

Thanks to Colorblind for a very eclectic mix provided last week - it was old
and new and all tempos. I'm off to track down the Mini Groove Orchestra
record now. Colorblind aka DJ Spider & Jun Matsuoka have now released their
debut self-titled album as well as a new 12" of "Novo Dia" remixed by Wagon
Cookin. Both are available through Spider's Lyon-based label, Plein Gaz.

And that will be the last newsletter for a few weeks as I'm taking a short
break. But I know you're in for some very interesting radio in the meantime
with the reunion (after 15 years) of 2 serious Melbourne soul fanatics, PJR
    and Dave Sinclair.

    until then
    Ennio Styles
