    Jon Freer’s Reviews. 6th October 2003.

Thanks to Nik Weston, Mark KSS and Brilliant Records for these...

Hird – I Love You My Friends (DNM)
Cat No: DNMEP004. Release Date: 20th October 2003. 12” EP.
Musical genius Christoffer Berg embraces his nearest and dearest, on this heart-warming follow up to the awe-inspiring “Keep You Hird”. “I Love You My Friends” sees eager filtered beats, simple keys that have an air of understated beauty about them, a subtle smiling bass and spaced-out calming synths combine on a cut where the affection is palpable. Perhaps his friends would have been even happier if he’d dedicated the awesome “Fading Blues” to them. It is a breathtaking slice of haunting musical love, with Yukimi Nagano’s bewitching vocals, gorgeous brass and a meaningful bassline.

Total Science – Sunrise / Bookworm (Head To Toe)
Cat No: TOE 011. Release Date: 20th October 2003. 12” single.
D&B big hitters Total Science delve into the inventive waters of broken beat, with this tasty two tracker. “Sunrise” warms you up like a shot of brandy, as keys shine, percussion kicks, heavyweight chords exert a powerful influence and flutes blast.

    V/A – Nattskift (Flora & Fauna)
Cat No: FFCD04. Promo. CD compilation.
Swedish Dub-Electro-House forward thinkers Flora & Fauna offer a selection of mainly laidback electronic based compositions. At time they veer too far on the experimental side of things, but some of the cuts are wonderful. Projekt Hertz’s “Heartz” is an emotive little key-led cut, with crackling poked beats, shocked chords and a bassline that sounds just like my electric shaver. Ban Ham’s “Mtal” is a tearful number, where waltzing melancholic breaks sit alongside cried keys, a down in the dumps bass and saddened guitar additions. “Hostlovepilogue” finds Christoffermusik (aka Hird!) in a tender pensive mood, as xylophone type keys wander over vague percussion assemblages, contorted strings and a gentle sax. Worth checking for select tracks!
