Da Lata at Band On The Wall, Manchester, UK. 8th April 2004.

Fronted by esteemed London spinner Patrick Forge and guitar maestro, Chris Franck, Da Lata’s musical repertoire draws on influences from around the globe. The term ‘world music’ is a condescending and dare it be said racist expression, that seems to have been devised by lazy western journalists to cover everything from others cultures. It is often used to categorise music that doesn’t obey simple genre rules. However, judging by the cultural melting pot of the musical soundscapes painted by this group, the phrase could be used in a factual context here! This live outing, part of a fleeting tour, saw an impressive array of musicians line up alongside Mr. Franck. The trio of talented singers who accompanied him on the stage were Jazzinho front woman Guida De Palma, Nina Miranda and Courtney Denni.

Their current album may be entitled “Serious”, but the demeanour of the collective at this show was anything but, with all those on stage obviously enjoying the job in hand. In the friendly confines of BOTW, their music came alive vibrantly and the modest sized crowd felt the full force of their carnival-esque drums, striking vocals and sharp instrumentation. The tracks they played dazzled in a way imperceptible from a casual listen to one of their records. Hits from the album, such as the earnest “Serious” and the romantically toned “Can It Be”, were incredibly well received. Da Lata also visited cuts from their back catalogue, unearthing some wonderfully Brazilian influenced gems. An unexpected treat was a rendition of the heart-warming “I Am With You”, penned by Chris Franck and Nina Miranda for Japanese keyboard wizard Hajime Yoshizawa.

Innovative Manc spinner Kelvin Brown handled was on hand to spin a few platters before and after the live show. His excellent selection included Ellen McIlwaine and Yukihiro Fukitomi’s broken-jazz-folk hybrid, “Born Under A Bad Sign”, and Jonny Miller’s infectious “Essi”.
