Gilles Peterson at The Tuesday Club, Sheffield Uni SU, Sheffield, 11th May 2004.

Turning up with longish locks and a trendy hat, Gilles made up for failing to make it earlier this year with a selection to please both followers of the records he champions and the hordes of students there because they’d heard Mr. Peterson plays ‘cool’ records or because of the Radio 1 connection. The crowd was of a moderate size, which is probably a result from the proximity of the date to university exams and reservations some non-students have about the venue, not because of Mr. Peterson’s inability to draw the punters in. As a special ‘treat’ Gilles brought along vocalist Earl Zinger in tow, who proceeded to act as announcer, dabbling in some impromptu and ill-advised MCing. It’s understandable that Mr. Peterson feels he needs to announce records on the Radio, but Earl’s crowd hyping abilities only stretched so far and at times his mic as well as his own ramblings interfered with the records spun!

In his own inimitable style, Gilles played records from just about start to finish, which was a nice change from hearing DJs cut between tracks every couple of minutes. His choice of music was impressive and varied as ever, even if sections of the crowd looked on cluelessly and refused to dance when he dropped some underground yet dancefloor conquering tracks such as RSL’s joyous “Wesley Music” and Spiritual South’s blistering “Green Gold”. It’s a shame that many punters seemed to spend most of the night yearning for the smattering of D&B rumblers he played towards the end, instead of getting down to records with slightly different beats, rhythms and styles. Fair play to Gilles for sticking to his guns though, and dropping the likes of Theo Parrish’s angularly beaten “Twin Cities” and the Henrik Schwarz re-rub of John Arnold’s anguish-ridden “Inside”. The irresistible “Brown Paper Bag” acted as a rather impressive finale, making sure that most people went home with smile!
     s on their faces.
