STYLIN - Rare grooves, hi-tech jazz and other worldly fusions
Friday afternoons 12-2pm RRR 102.7FM, Melbourne (GMT +11)
Live online - http://www.rrr.org.au (see below for global times)

    Hello all

I don't know whether it's me or the music, but soul seems to be the winning sound for Stylin at the moment. The Stylin Loves 2004 show had another healthy dose of soul, just like last year. It's definitely not one sound though, as we had acoustic soul (John Legend, Toni Redd), classic soul (Alicia Keys, Jill Scott), broken soul (Omar), techno soul (Zap Mama/Carl Craig), afrobeat soul (Akoya), hip hop soul (PPP, Amerie, Kanye West, Teedra Moses), soul jazz (Fertile Ground, Troublemakers), rock soul (NERD) and boogie (Kelis). One of last year's favourites, Outkast ended up winning the Best Album Grammy. Can Alicia Keys do it this time? I hope so. Other 2004 trends included the rise of live jazz groups with a DJ/club sensibility such as Build an Ark, Sleepwalker and Nicola Conte's group. And let's hope Bembe Segue does her own album, after ripping performances in 2004 with Mark de Clive-Lowe, Sleepwalker, Nicola Conte and Alex Attias.

As always, it's fitting for me to give thanks at this time to everyone who has contributed to Stylin in 2004. To the labels, distributors, artists, DJs and producers who provided promos, mixes, giveaways and interviews. We've had another great year of guests including Dom Servini, the Nextmen, DJ Premier, Paul Murphy, Kid Koala, Outkast, Daniel Merriweather (live), the Pharcyde, Kenny Larkin, Beatfanatic, Philharmonix, Calibre and plenty more. To all the RRR subscribers and sponsors without whom there could be no Stylin, and without whom RRR would not be able to move as it is doing in the next 2 weeks. Thanks to all the clubs, promoters and DJs who have invited me to play. Thanks to all the press who have published my charts, listings and written reviews. It was nice to see Stylin take out Best Radio Show in the Zebra 2004 Writers' Poll once again, and even more suprisingly to come runner-up in the usually rock-oriented Inpress poll. Thanks to Katya and all my friends and fa!
mily for everything they do behind the scenes. And thanks to all who listen and support the great music that is being made.

2005 is going to be a big year. I'm taking a break from Stylin today and next week. When I'm back on 21 January it will be lots of new beginnings as I'll be a father and will be broadcasting from RRR's new studios in Brunswick. Open Sesame is back at Honkytonks next Thursday, with Romanowski giveaways. The Local People album should be getting an international release and a Local People remix of 60s soul diva Barbara Acklin will be finished very soon.

Hope the new year is shaping up well for all of you.

    until then
    Ennio Styles
