I can't believe it has been two years already. Three venues, and two
boroughs later the party just continues to grow. I want to thank all the
DJs, musicians, and party people that have helped turn this party into what

Afrokinetic celebrates two years of funky rhythms and soulful grooves
Vikter Duplaix joins DJ Chris Annibell for the soundtrack of Saturday night
Drawing from a range of soulful, groove-oriented styles, Brooklyn-based
DJ/producer Chris Annibell has watched Afrokinetic turn into one of
Saturday nightıs most revered parties. Featuring some of todayıs most
inventive DJs, live percussionists and, of course, demanding dancers, a
world of rhythms have found home in Annibellıs skilled hands. On June 4 he
turns it up a notch as Hollywood Records artist Vikter Duplaix jumps on the
decks, as well as a special live performance by Prophecy Arts Collective, a
four-man West African drum troupe accompanied by a four-woman dance
ensemble. The combination of live percussion, dancers and, of course, tight
DJing will make this the birthday no one forgets.
Initially launched at East Village hotspot Nublu and then spending nearly a
year at Park Slopeıs The Royale, Afrokinetic moved to Star 64 (formerly Star
Foods) in October 2004, where it has been filled to capacity since. Over the
two-year stretch Afrokinetic has seen an amazing roster of talent, including
Rich Medina, MKL, Qool DJ Marv, Nickodemus, Reborn, Spinna, Derek Sessions,
JBoogie and Jason Douglas, as well as live instrumentalists Nappy G, Jimmy
Lopez, Isabel Walker and Neil Ochoa. On June 4 Duplaix travels from Philly
to join Annibell in providing a smooth segue from Latin, Afrofunk, Dub,
house and more.
Regardless of culture or continent, Annibell uses music as a sonic epoxy
binding the dance floor, the distinctive trait of Afrokinetic. "In my
experience with music all that matters is rhythm," he says. "The same thing
has happened with all forms of music: jazz, reggae, hip-hop, house. I go out
and blindly pick up records that look interesting and rhythm is always the
driving force. It just so happens that most of the rhythms we use are
Afro-rhythms. Even in Europe and America, the root is in Africa."
Annibell began training as a kit drummer and percussionist in 1985, turning
to vinyl 12 years later. In 1997 he began writing and producing tracks as
Osiris, mostly alongside Turntables on the Hudson founder Nickodemus. Since
that time he has refined and tweaked the sounds of Astor Piazzolla, Spacek,
Mark Rae, Sultan Khan, Zap Mama and more. Influenced heavily by hip-hop and
house, Annibellıs percussive edge makes all his creations instantly
accessible on dancefloors and headphones alike. In the midst of New York
multiculturalism, Afrokineticıs devoted fanbase is as vast as the music
Annibell performs.
"Every week I have a guest come in and really hit home one specific style of
music, then my job is to come in and pick up the pieces and make sense of
the rest of the night. Youıre listening to soul, then suddenly youıre
dancing to Afrobeat and weıre tying the lineage together in a way you might
not expect to hear. Thatıs the concept of Afrokinetic: Afro for rhythm,
kinetic for body movement, expression."
