I was out shoppin' for music and picked up a flyer:
Strong @ The Croc.
DJ's Mike Z and Brian Lyons
spinnin' hip hop jazz and other famous funky beats
Wednesday July 12th @ The Crocodile Cafe
2200 2nd Ave
So I figgered I'd send out a plug. You might remember this from Brian
Lyons' post a few months ago about a bi-weekly wednesday night groove
at the Croc... Well, it's going weekly RSN and this place is rapidly
becoming an excellent alternative (or additive!) to Spice night at
Moe's. It hasn't exactly turned the Croc into AJ heaven yet, since not
enough people know about it yet I guess, on the other hand that also
means you can still get to the bar ;)

I've never had the pleasure of seeing Mike Z spin jazz (yet) but I did
buy his mixed tape "Jazzen'" at Exotique Imports ($10ish - decent
price) a while ago and it is SOLID. The songs tend ta be non-vocal,
alternating between the fat beats and samples of NinjaTune/CleanUp/etc
AJ and the more mellow grooves of some first-rate old-time jazz funk.
But it's not the same ole same ole - with some obvious disclaimers I
guarantee you there will be stuff on this tape ya haven't got, or even
haven't heard before. And the man is obviously very comfortable with
his record collection 'cuz he mixes between them slow & easy, the way
it was meant to be - not just yankin' the crossfader back and forth
like on some of the tapes I've heard. It's all woven together with the
common thread that the songs really are acid JAZZ and not just tr*ph*p
or whatever else you want to call it. Definitely the best hiphop&jazz
tape I own. For those that are interested in tape trading, I'd be glad
ta head out and pick you up a copy of this excellent mix... lemme know.
