I picked up this CD on the strength of the single "Brown Sugar" alone. The
single I thought was quite refreshing and very "soul" (but not in the campy
kind of way). Although, the single HAD to be exceptional with Ali's (from
Tribe Called Quest) participation.

However, I was taking a chance on buying the entire album based on one
single, but I did, and it turns out that it was not a bad choice. It's not
the same as getting like a new Omar album, but it has its moments.

What is an ABSOLUTE is that this guy has a superb voice. He can harmonize his
butt off (he could even give Prince (I've spent so much money on this man; that
his name will continue to be Prince) a run for his money when it comes to
falsetto). so... if you are into vocals, buy this!

Now, the music on the otherhand, I thought, could have been much stronger,
but one thing about the music is that it is quite consistent in sound and
approach (he even has this weird, quirky keyboard patch that he uses in most
of the songs). It is not an ecletic album say like Dionne Farris' where
almost every song has a different feel. Most of the music is pretty laid
back and smooth. Upon, first listen, this makes it kind of dull, but when
you get into the subtleness of the songs as a whole, it is quite good.

In particular, he remakes the song "Cruisin'" and I ABHOR remakes. (I think
originals should be just left alone.) However, this is one of the highlights
of this album. He adds his own twist to it in vocals and it works for me.

Enough!
