I must second the shout out for the Last Poets, they were the power and
continue to do strong work, in fact they worked within the acid jazz
genre with the Silent Poets on Words and Silence. Along with all the
other roots Rap I think that it has been artists such as these that have
led to the vocal rythms that we all enjoy.
