Yo, i didnt mean for everybody to get their dreads in a knot.

first off, im the first one to support listening to all types of music. i
listen to jazz, blues, hardcore, death metal, thrash metal, ska, hip hop,
house, breakbeat, whatever.

my little quip about Give it Away was just to say that a lot of get one
little song and dig it and think they are all over shit. the first funk
band i listened to were the peppers. i heard freaky styley and and i said,
"Damn!" i got into what influenced the chili peppers, and lo and behold,
here i am.

there are so many who dont go farther though. they say, "hey this funk is
the best!" then some other top 40 disc comes out and they say "Hey! this
grunge is the best!" and move on.

if people dig something funky they hear on the radio, great. if they never
buy another funky CD again, that's fine. if they decide funk is the bomb,
then that even better. people have to start somewhere. I am into ska
music. i only have heard a little, but what i have heard i like. i dont
say im a total rude boy, though. i would say i listen to ska here and
there, and i dig it.

I just dont think one can say one is "super funk" if its really only a
passing thing. they can say "yeah, i listen to a little funk once in a
while, its cool." thats cool. i would call them a casual listener as
opposed to someone who immerses themselves in it. at least they have
respect for it. i dont think im pigeonholing, im just distinguishing
between who simply digs the funk and who would die for it.

If i sneer at some kid who think funk ends with the Peppers, its only
because he or she doesnt take the time to really figure out what funk is
about. im not better then they, my tastes are not more valid then their's,
and im not waging war against them. There are those who are down for the
funk, and there are those who are not.

peace,
