Point about people who don't have proper net access is quite valid, but
there are disadvantages to newsgroups. There's nothing to stop setting
one up, but USENET is full of SPAM (= irrelevant stuff posted to
absolutely everyplace), while mailing list has some natural walls (you
have to subscribe and/or know the list address to write) to stop some of
the garbage.

As for the cluttered up mailboxes, try to get a mail program that
sorts your mail automatically folders. Without procmail I probably
wouldn't be subscribed to this list at all (as there's no digest)..

One option is to read the list in the web at the Acid Jazz
list archive..
