I would definitely call Kraftwerk the fathers of modern dance music.
Supposedly the early New York hip hop djs dug them and played there tunes at
parties pretty often. Ultimately it was a Kraftwerk sample that propelled
electro-funk into the mainstream with "Planet Rock" by Afrika Bambatta. I
would say "Planet Rock" is the song that most of the bands considered trip hop,
jungle or whatever would trace a direct lineage to. The best Kraftwerk record
in my mind is that neon green one with computer love and the song the Bamb
sampled.

My introduction to Krautrock was through a roommate who played it 24-7. This
was a nice introduction, but then quickly became overkill!

We are also forgetting Klaus Schultz and Tangerine Dream for great early
ambient.
