A noise gate is "designed" to close off the signal that's running thru it
once the level of the signal goes below a certian db level - they have a
knob for adjusting the level.

A crossover is "designed" to split a full frequency signal into 2, 3, or 4
ranges.
(ie: 10hz - 100hz/100hz - 8khz/8khz - 20khz)

Both these units are great tools. That karaoke thing does sound wacky
though.
