The Greyboy Allstars
A Town Called Earth
GBR005
CD only

HERE THEY COME! The Greyboy Allstars are back 2 years and a couple of
solo trips around the block later with their second group effort. 'A Town
Called Earth' tackles the unanswered question; "are we a global village
or just gypsies with telephones?" The Greyboy Allstars show why they are
The Ultimate Groove Band with a cornucopia of jazzy styles. Ranging from
the sweet soundtrack-style 'December's Bicycle' to classic Allstars' funk
on songs like 'Toys R Us' and 'Turnip's Big Move' the boys from San Diego
show off what they do best. The record flows along in boogaloo fashion
with 'Happy Friends' and 'Quantico, VA' then strictly for the hardcore
jazzheads steps way left of center with the 15 minute title track 'A Town
Called Earth'. 'Planet of the Superkids' and 'Blues for Celia' pay homage
to the band's jazzy roots with a smooth dance flavor. Rounding out the
album 'The Many Moods of Erik Newson' is a classic old-style jazz track.
The session ends with the raucous rock and roll excursion 'Sportscaster'.
Variety is their aim and serious songwriting is the name of the game.
They are here. They are for real. They are The Greyboy Allstars.

A brief history or 10 facts you should know about The Greyboy Allstars

We're about to set the record straight once and for all so listen real
good because we'll only say it once.

1. The band is called The Greyboy Allstars not Greyboy Allstars, or The
Greyboys or even Greyboy. The five members are Karl Denson (sax, flute,
vocals), Elgin Park (guitar), Robert Walter (keyboards), Chris Stillwell
(bass) and Zak Najor (drums).
2. DJ Greyboy put the band together with Karl Denson in 1993 and
produces some of their work. He also has a rather successful solo
career with Ubiquity Recordings.
3. The Greyboy Allstars music is best described as boogaloo or soul jazz,
styles that became prominent in the sixties and seventies. Check out
releases on Blue Note, Prestige or Fantasy during that period and
you'll get the idea. This music also influenced the creation of acid
jazz which was wonderful in the late eighties but has long since had its
heyday. Please don't use that term and The Greyboy Allstars in the same
sentence.
4. Karl Denson worked with Lenny Kravitz for 4 years and can be heard on
'Let Love Rule' and 'Mama Said'. He was also a member of Fred Wesley's
band and has worked with many other musical legends (Eddie Harris, Jack
DeJohnette, Pee Wee Ellis, Maceo Parker, Bootsy Collins). Karl has 4 solo
jazz albums out on Minor Music. Karl now plays full time with The
Greyboy Allstars.
5. Mike Andrews also goes by the name Elgin Park (named in part after
the basketball legend, Elgin Baylor). Elgin is his rock star name which
we think he's entitled to have if he wants.
6. Fred Wesley, Andy Bey, Gary Bartz and Melvin Sparks are not part of
The Greyboy Allstars' touring band. All of them have either toured once
or twice with the band or guested on our releases, for which we will be
eternally grateful.
7. The Greyboy Allstars are a successful live band. They are currently
touring approximately 20 days out of every month in 500-1000+ seat
venues.
8. The band positively encourages the practice of bootlegging. However,
don't piss off the soundman and if we catch you selling our music on a
major scale we will have to get medieval on your ass.
9. Now that we are distributed through A.D.A you can buy our music at
most record stores. If they don't have our titles in stock, just ask
the nice retail assistant to order it for you. Alternatively, we offer
mail order through our website http://www.greyboy.com or call 619 236
9130.
10. The Greyboy Allstars love their jobs and want to continue making
amazing music for a very long time. We thank all of you for the support
you have given and ask that you continue coming to the shows, buying
our records and keeping the vibe alive.
