Mephisto Odyssey is Mikeal Johnston and Orpheos Dejournette of San
Francisco (well, Alameda and Oakland to be specific...). They've been
making brilliant music under this moniker for quite a while now and it is
good to finally see them get a full album release, through City Of Angels
(and thus possible major label exposure via Geffen/Outpost).

The confusing thing is Mephisto Odyssey the band really has nothing to do
with Mephisto the label anymore. Mikeal and Orpheos started the label over
3 years ago with Steve Grey, an ex-member of Nottingham, England's DIY crew
who moved to SF to start the acclaimed Love From San Francisco label with
Charles Webster. Partly due to the City Of Angels deal, Mephisto Odyssey no
longer record for Mephisto Records, though Orpheos still releases some fine
jazz house solo 12"s on Mephisto ("Just Like That" and "Drop The Bomb" are
the 2 so far).

Steve Grey was also the VP of Om Records (but no longer), with Om head
Chris Smith also a Mephisto stock-holder and the person behind the Fluid
Motion project. Now, Steve has decided to relax and pass the reigns of
Mephisto to Patty Ryan, who was the mastermind behind the Mushroom Jazz
project (the CD, the SF club night, and the tour). Future releases due soon
are from Fluid Motion, Sci-Fi Select, and Orpheos... and they're all
slamming.

For more of an overview on Mephisto Odyssey and Mephisto Records, get the
compilation 'Darker Side Of Jazz' on City Of Angels or 'Mephisto: The
Subterranean Sound Of San Francisco' on Crammed/SSR. These are both
compilations on this fine US label.

Hope this info helps!
