Talk about categorical prejudice.
Ever heard any Pharcyde, Poor Righteous Teachers? I don't really know what
to call their style. It's kind of tonal rapping, almost singing but yet...
dope. Massive Attack. Tricky with his whisper raps. These people rap, or
do they? What about ragga? U-roy chatting. What am I saying? I guess I'm
sick of people dabbing their toes in "trip-hop" who have no conception of
(and sometimes no respect for) its fundamental Hiphop roots and see only the
narrow representation that "Rap" gets these days. I know Coldcut/DJ Food
(same peeps) made their name by remixing Eric B. & Rakim's, "Paid in Full".
Why don't you add that album to your list and expand your mentals.
Ironically, as a DJ, I've been moving towards purely abstract hiphop and
dubwise beats. Nevertheless, I maintain massive respect for the brilliant
MC's out there.
80M
ps I've heard one track by Sabres of Paradise and it ain't all that, but I
may be prematurely generalizing. Recipe for Disaster satisfies me. I'm not
too familiar with the rest but I could give you some other recommendations
if you're interested.
