Tahira,

Spyro Gyra has got to be my all time favorite jazz group! The early
"Catching The Sun" and "Morning Dance" are, for me, true classics of
jazz fusion. Spyro Gyra was responsible for getting my nose out of top
40, rock, soul, funk and whatever else I was into back in the late
70's/early 80's. They somehow brought it all together for me and in
turn introduced me to instrumental music. Jay Beckenstein and the core
members of the group have consistently released a quality new project
every year since their first one in 1977. Like a true fan, I've got
them all. Who knows?, without that first turnon to Spyro Gyra I may
never have found my way into this big thang that is acid jazz.

BTW, have you checked out the Rippington's? They're my second top
choice for straight up jazz. They've been around for 10 years producing
some quality jazzy jams. Especially recommended is the "Live in L.A."
release from 1993. There last couple of releases fell too much into the
smooth jazz format for me. However, the newest release, "Black
Diamond", finds Russ Freeman and the band back into the groove from
their earlier releases like "Kilimanjaro" and "Tourist in Paradise".

Later,

Devon
