Fwd: Lounge with Beats

Dear List: When Rock and Roll came out it
was an antidote to
the Pop of the time: hot where the latter was cool,
fast instead of
languid. Hip hop was the latest part of this
evolution; it was
hard mainly reliant on drums, funky. So it is funny
to me to realize,
while listening to Alphas debut, that my love of
Portishead led me to
Massive Attack . This in Turn led me to John Barry
soundtracks an the
finall to the aforementioned Alpha who put in pure
form the Vibe that
has been implied in all the other UK groups : Pre
sixties Pop(lounge)
Music with Beats. The Kind of people who are cited
by Alpha(jimmy Webb,
Jaques Brel) wouldnt have gotten near my turntable
2 years ago. This
is music your parents thought was square. Im not
knocking it
necessarily. It just hit me like those animals in
Orwells Animal Farm :
the point of a 40 year revolution seems to have been
to bring us right
back were we started. True ,Portishead are more "
Rocky" than Massive
but when you go from Masive to Alpha and you throw
in the more Shirley
Bassy sounding Attica Blues things You start
thinking hey Im being
tricked into becoming my Grandparents. again my mom
is way too cool to
let stuff this square into the house (she likes
Elvis). Just a weird
thought.
