If you like Billie Holiday's torch songs, you should check out alot of
Frank Sinatra's repertoire. Sure, he swung with the best of them, but he
also wrote some of the most beautiful torch songs that I've ever heard. His
50's stuff on Capitol records is really great, especially "Only The Lonely",
"In The Wee Small Hours Of The Morning", and "No One Cares". While
recording "Only The Lonely", he was going through his divorce from Ava
Gardner and, so the story goes, attempted suicide by an overdose of sleeping
pills while drinking heavily. Let's just say that you can hear his pain
on many of the songs. On Reprise records, there's a record called "A Man
Alone", which is Sinatra interpreting McKuen songs, and "All Alone", which
is also a record full of torch songs. Really beautiful stuff. Hope this
helps!!
