Herbie Hancock Founds Label
Herbie Hancock is launching his own
artist-driven imprint, Hancock Records,
which will fall under the auspices of Verve Records. The new
label, whose activities will be supervised by pianist/composer
Hancock and David Passick of David Passick Entertainment,
will create new releases for Verve, Verve Forecast, and
Antilles. Hancock's role will vary from project to project,
including "A&R, performer, executive producer, and
producer," according to a Verve spokesman. Hancock
Records' debut release, "The Return Of The Headhunters,"
will be a reunion of the jazz-funk band Hancock fronted in
1973; the set will street July 21. The label would not divulge
any additional signings or estimate how many albums it
would release per year.
As for Hancock himself, his Gershwin tribute album,
"Gershwin's World," will be released Sept. 22 by both Verve
and Deutsche Grammophon. Future Hancock albums "will
be released on the appropriate label in PolyGram Classics
and Jazz," according to the spokesman.
