GIANT STEP AND LEVI'S BRING YOU #10/12
in the MILES A HEAD series
Special Live Debut
** esthero **
³BREATH FROM ANOTHER²
Thursday, May 28th @ Shine, 9pm

Pioneers like Goldie, Roni Size and Lamb have set the groove
for drumınıbass scenes world wide. New acts have been sprouting
up like weeds but few have blossomed. Now from the land of
clearwater and fertile soil, is the time for Canada to represent.
Thursday, May 28th, esthero takes to the stage with a full live
set up for their US debut with Giant Step.

³Music was the lamb that made the lion out of me.² A too true
statement from Esthero, the firey redhead who has taken music as
her way of life. After leaving the security of her parentıs house at
the age of 16, Esthero offered her powerful voice to any willing ear.
After numerous fruitless attempts it finally fell on the right ears.
When she came across a Twin City funk rocker,Doc, a man possessed by
his studio, positive and negative touched and made a solid bond.
Honing in on the massive potential she teamed up with the programming
wizard and together culminated a style of boundless musical energy.

Estheroıs fire-breathing passion with Docıs guitar playing
background and unending devotion to mastering production techniques
fell right in place in Torontoıs mixed urban music scene of hip hop,
trip hop, r&b, rock and ska. Out of the chaos they formed structure,
the outcome - their debut album ³BREATH FROM ANOTHER²(Sony / WORK).
Working one song at a time in the studio that doubled as Docıs apartment
they crafted their sound. They rounded off drumınıbass and hip hop
beats with hard guitar riffs, soft piano rolls, and orchestrated string
lines. To this they brought in the rhyme styles of Shug and Meesha and
turntable techniques by DJ Grouch. But it isnıt until Estheroıs sweet
ballads and powerfully intimate tales of life are laid on top that
it all comes together. Smoothing out in a Sade style in tracks like
³SUPERHEROES² and rocking the Bjork type power surges in
³Breath from another² and ³heaven Sent², she cradles every listener
- satisfying every style.

Having lent the title track out for remixes by Talvin Singh and
DJ Krust, esthero is now ready to present themselves to New York with
a full live band. Join us along with special guest DJ (T.B.A.)
for the sure to be sold out show.

The Music of MILES DAVIS 1969 - 1974

It revisits a period in the career of the renegade horn-blower
and confirms conclusively that he was - and still is - way ahead
of his time. Reconstructed from the original session masters by
producer and musician Bill Laswell, this continuously-mixed
piece of music uses material from a trio of albums - "In A Silent
Way" (1969, "On The Corner" (1972), and "Get Up With It" (1974)
- and inevitably draws connections between Miles Davis' experiments
in extreme sonics and the sounds of contemporary music such as
hip hop and drum and bass.

"It is this musical period that means so much to the musicians of
today, when Miles made his most extreme music, and Laswell's approach
presents it in a fresh and accessible light. There has never been a
better introduction." -five star rating -VOX April 1998
