better times in L.A.

there's actually been some cool things going on for a while...

not to discount what the science crew is doing, but they tend to be on the
dark/techy end of the drum & bass spectrum (every time *i've* been there)
and it's not really my thing.

if you want to hear some dope d&b on the jazzy, dubby/ragga or funk tip you
should really check out jazzid up! on saturdays. i am biased as jazzid up!
is my club, but few people (in l.a.) are doing what we do. besides, right
now it's still free, so you haven't put out any money for admission if you
don't like the music (the drinks are great--ask *anybody*!!). we also play
other music in the acid-jazz spectrum (e.g. trip-hop, dub, rare-groove
& soul) and in a very fresh & inventive way--i know it sounds like hype, but

check it out & see!!

obviously, i recommend all of my gigs and my friends' gigs, but i think
they're quality music gigs (i.e. we play the music because we like it, *and*
it can rock crowds). also, a few of them are free (broadway bar & grill,
the
room & nova express) so they're low-risk...

the gig list...

broadway bar & grill 1460 3rd st promenade santa monica (right at the corner
of broadway & 3rd)
friday "vibes" is the jazz spot on the westside. top-notch
straigt-ahead jazz bands (dave pike is a semi-regular performer) and
dj junior roach laying down sweet jazz vinyl & truly rare-grooves.

saturday "jazzid up!" the only "acid-jazz" club i know of in l.a. on
saturday nights (i.e. a-j is the main focus of the music).
rare-groove/acid-jazz sets warm you up for the live music feature at
11pm, then it's balls-out djing till 2am--none of this
turn-the-lights
-on-and-get-everybody-out at 1:30 b.s.!! resident djs are plan 9
(secretservice) junior roach & t-bird (both of stereotypes djs).

the room 1626 cahuenga bl. hollywood (1/2 block s. of hollywood bl, go
around
the back, feels more underground, eh?)
sunday [trip-hop] anthony throws down seriously spliffed-out grooves
that work even if you *don't* smoke...

monday [a-j/hiphop/rare-groove/d&b] mark farmer (of 45 vibe/ex-brass)
& elonzo spin new and classic tunes depending on their mood--all
dope!
martini lounge 5657 melrose av hollywood (1 block east of vine)
monday "fat & jazzy" opens w/bands (usually on the jazzy/funky tip),
then t-bird spinning acid-jazz, rare-groove, upbeat trip-hop & drum
& bass--all dancefloor oriented. anthony (from the room) plays more
hazy beats upstairs...

friday "internationalist vs. dubwise" is a collision of an acid-jazz
club (internationalist--formerly@moguls) w/a dancehall club
(dubwise).
the congregation has a standing gig there (the keyboardist is a
listee), and dj ty flexes both jazz & reggae beats...
the joint 8771 pico bl. (at robertson) l.a.
sunday "temple of the west" is more of an expansive version of a
hiphop club--i.e. you'll hear more than just hiphop. l.a. jay
(producer/remixer--de la's "ego trip pt.2") played classic breaks
(source material for hiphop loops) when i went, they have live groups

(tara ellis & justice leeg, most recently) and plan 9 plays his
patented mix of hip/trip-hop, breaks & jungle.
nova express 462 n. fairfax av. l.a. (1 1/2 blks n. of beverly bl.--across
the street from canter's deli)
thursday [abstrakt grooves] dj friar tuck & guests go from groovy to
mental to mentally disturbed tracks. the most fun you've ever had
getting twisted (or blissed out) w/o the aid of alchohol or other
drugs--sugar & caffeine excepted!! kevin lincoln has actually been
seen hanging out here...
