Brand New Heavies Live

Well, am I annoyed or what! Why I hear you ask, well let me tell you.

On the way home this evening free London newspaper "Metro" had a piece
advertising the heavies and the fact that they're playing a one-off
gig tonight (Monday) at the Scala, Pentonville Road, N1, London.

I'll keep an eye out for any reviews.....

David.

The article reads as follows....

The Brand New Heavies are the type of band the never go away.

Hits such as Midnight at the Oasis and Dream on Dreamer are firmly
entrenched in the pop soul scene of the early Nineties and the satin
sheen of their music looks faded and pale next to the new crop of
classy R'n'B acts dominating the British soul scene.

Rather than depend upon an innovative and rhythmic use of instruments
to carve out their sassy, brassy funk, the Heavies have always
weighted their songs in the vocal power of their female front-person -
a member they've never been that good at keeping hold of, and they are
currently on their fourth. It is the recent appointment of Carleen
Anderson, the sweet-toned vocalist on The Young Disciples' single
Apparently Nothin', and step-daughter of saxophonist Bobby Byrd, a
former member of James Brown's backing group, that has occasioned this
gig. It is both a showcase of the greatest hits album - due in
September - Trunk Funk, and a taster of their new album expected in
the new year.

Despite the fact that two of their albums have gone platinum (Brother
Sister, Shelter), The Heavies' reputation has always been fuelled by
their gigs rather than radio airplay and tonight they should cut a
typically strong live performance, even if it is flavoured with
nostalgia.

Claire Allfree.
