Nou Jazz Messenger
Although not familiar to most, Dozia is a veteran DJ and producer with a
deep influential music history stemming all the way back to his great
uncle, the legendary jazz drummer Art Blakey.

Paying his dues early on, Dozia carried his brother’s records from gig
to gig and basement to basement, in hopes of one-day rocking the party.
Inspired by the Philly DJs Cash Money and Jazzy Jeff, Dozia started
collecting and practicing his craft, listening to everything from
Bambataa to The Smiths. By 1987, Dozia started his first residency at
the Black Banana. After building a following, he started what became a
legendary Philly party, Vagabond. The party moved from club to club,
spreading the deep house and techno sounds all around the Philly scene.
Four years running, the party included DJs Josh Wink, King Britt and Boy
Blake. At the end of Vagabond, Dozia went on to gain legendary status at
the infamous ‘Back to Basics’ parties at Sylk City. There, he and cohort
(and roommate) King Britt brought the sounds of sweet soul and acid jazz
to Philly. "Sylk City was the shit!" King recalls. "Whenever Doz and I
DJ together it's always a magical experience." Dozia also played a few
dates with Digable Planets.

Moving from the dancefloor to the studio Dozia started doing remixes and
founded his own imprint, Nou Lion Recordings. The Aura EP with King
Britt, "Steal Away" and "Shape Shifter" brought Nou Lion and Dozia into
the spotlight worldwide. Then "Pop Kulture" on OVUM RECORDINGS gained
Dozia much respect from DJ Sneak, Doc Martin and Trevor Rockliffe as a
world class producer. He most recently remixed Danny Tenaglia’s
"Elements" for the upcoming 'Twisted Secrets' compilation and completed
a remix of David Alvarado’s "Klugh", to be released on Ovum Recordings.
Dozia is also a member of Scuba (Ovum Recordings) along with partners
King Britt and Victor Duplaix (MAW Recordings). Look out in 2000 for a
secret project in the works with King Britt and Dozia.

With all of this production work Dozia still maintains his residency at
Club Shampoo in Philly and DJs regularly in Atlanta, Florida, New York
and Germany keeping the floors moving to the solar funk sounds of house
music.
