RE: Lauryn Hill Makes Me Feel Unwell

Hello all,

Since I was the one to really get this ball rolling, I thought I might
try to clarify my viewz. First, I think it's great that a black artist
has received this level of recognition. This is probably going to pave
the way for more female and/or black artists in the future. (As a side
note, I'm glad that Madonna , who is a true trailbazer for women in
the male-dominated music industry, finally got the recognition she
deserved for a great album.) Second, I agree that Lauryn Hill is a
much better role model BY FAR than these other sex-peddlers. What are
they looking for, a spot on Jerry Springer or Ricki Lake?!
My point is that her music doesn't make the grade from where I
stand. The beats are tired, and the musical concepts just don't sound
that sophisticated for someone with her voice. Although she did
everything on her own this time out(and she definitely deserves credit
for trying), it sounds like she could use some guidance from the pros
in the industry. I'd like to hear what she could do fronting an outfit
like the Roots or even the Brand New Heavies. She seems to be coming
from a more pure hip-hop side of things, and acid jazz is more my
thing. My reference points are Monday Michiru(JAZZ BRAT in
particular), Outside, UFO, Jamiroquai, BNH, Erykah Badu, Jhelisa,
Slide Five, even Loose Ends(wouldn't that be cool!). True, her record
did connect with a lot of people, I'm just one exception.
The more I think about it, the more I think that she'd be a fool
to go back with the Fugees. She just happened to skyrocket straight
out of that orbit. My request, Lauryn, is to maybe show a softer side
to your music, work on the melody and beats, and to mellow out a bit.
Surely your record company would allow that, seeing that you've done
so much for them already.
I think her confidence will show thru on the next album, and
maybe the music will improve. We'll see.

Take Care-----Paul Berger---
