Preamble Ramble:
The first 75 minutes of "Jazzadelica" were pre-empted this week,
due to some special programming for our annual KFJC fundraiser.
(HUGE thanks to all who donated!) And due to time limitations,
I did not pick an "Album of the Week." However, I would like to
share with you some of the musical highlights of MY week, which
were all LIVE this time:

YO! MILES - Henry Kaiser and Wadada Leo Smith's Miles Davis
tribute project received its first public performance this week
as part of the San Francisco Jazz Festival. Live at the historic
Fillmore, this incendiary band included Kaiser & Smith, plus
the Rova Saxaphone Quartet, Zakir Hussein, Nels & Alex Cline,
Michael Manring, Chris Muir, Tom Coster, and Hamid Drake. Each
musician could warrant a paragraph of their own, but suffice it
to say that the old Miles voodoo was definitely run down again,
29 years after the classic live album BLACK BEAUTY was recorded
in this same venue. (Hopefully someone was taping THIS show!)
A mind-altering 60's-style lightshow added to the timewarp effect.
And as if that weren't enough, opening the show was The New Art
Jazz Quartet: James 'Blood' Ulmer, Rashied Ali, Reggie Workman
and John Hicks. Between the four of them, they've worked with
Art Blakey, John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, Sonny Rollins, Bill
Laswell, and many many more. Their set for the evening fused
something new out of their collective experiences, and was one
of the best "opening acts" I've seen in a LONG while.

LINTON KWESI JOHNSON with DENNIS BOVELL AND THE DUB BAND - Dub
poet Johnson's album FORCES OF VICTORY was one of the first
reggae albums I ever bought (in 1979), and is still one of my
all-time favorites. Over an impeccable roots/dub backing by
Dennis Bovell and the Dub Band, LKJ raps about racism, political
oppression, police brutality, and more. LKJ is one of the only
artists I know that can make you want to dance and cry at the
same time. And this weekend in Santa Cruz, I did exactly that.
The fact of the matter is, most of the conditions that LKJ was
rapping about 20 years ago have not changed, or have even gotten
worse. Some of the newer stories he told were even more heart-
breaking than the old ones. Johnson tours very infrequently,
and it was a rare, rare treat to see him play at Palookaville,
a small club in Santa Cruz. (Bay Area readers: you have not seen
a reggae show until you've seen one in Santa Cruz. This town
EXISTS for reggae.) And seeing him play all his classic material
with Dennis Bovell and the Dub Band was a nostalgic and poignant
event that I will remember for years to come.

PATRICIA BARBER - Jazz pianist and vocalist Barber has been
releasing albums and playing around the Chicago area for 10 years,
though I only first heard her via her 1997 album, MODERN COOL.
An extremely sultry singer, an impeccable pianist, and one of
the most literate songwriters working in jazz today, Barber
popped in to Palo Alto this week for a show at Cubberly Community
Center. Originally an old high school auditorium, the venue is
a bit too stuffy for my taste but certainly respectful for the
artist, and Barber deserves immense respect. Her records are
exercises in quiet intensity, and the live experience was even
more intense. Playing barefoot and repeatedly flexing her arms,
hands, and feet, Barber hunched over the piano to play like
some mad scientist, hair falling in her face. At times she
even reached inside the piano to plink on the strings or dampen
the decay. The performance was so physical it added a whole
new dimension to the tracks on her albums. Barber tours very
infrequently, so if you have a chance to see her live, by all
means do not miss it.

Three great shows in four days. Man, I LOVE the Bay Area! :-)
OK, now on to that playlist...
