hmmmnnn......let's see, for dance clubs the King Street Garage
and 1015 Folsom (soma) often have a good dj scene. check out
Nickey's BBQ in lower Haight too, lotsa funk and whatnot (strange
neighborhood though). also a place on Divisadero, the Justice League,
is very cool. Live music and/or djs. DV8 and SoundFactory (soma)
generallysuck.

(oh yeah, SOMA= south of market)

for live music, the Elbo Room (mission) has good latin/funk/acidjazz/hiphop
also check out Cafe Du Nord. the Up & Down Club has live music on one
level and dj's on the other. both on Market I think. Blake's on Telegraph in
Berkeley and Jupiter in Oakland are also very cool.

other good live venues to keep an eye on are Slim's, Paradise Lounge,
Maritime Hall, Bottom of the Hill, Last Day Saloon.

The SF Weekly *and* Bay Guardian are your best friend. usually an extensive
list of shows and dance clubs by genre towards the back.

bands to check out:

vinyl -funk/latin-jazz/instrumental
resin -latin/jazz/funk
mingus amongus -afrocentric jazz-hop
junglebiskit -hip hop/jazz/funk
charlie hunter -jazz
alphabet soup -hip hop/jazz/funk
will bernard 4-tet -jazz

also

galactic (inst funk from new orleans), greyboy allstars (acidjazz from
san diego) and the various "sidecar" projects ofthen play in the bay area
as well.

i grew up in the bay area (and miss it!)....and have been living in Los Angeles
for the last year plus......enjoy SF!!!!

word.
