Speaking of tapes and DJ credibility: a couple of years ago I had the
pleasure of seeing dubmeister Adrian Sherwood DJ a set with nothing but
cassettes and DATs. Oh yes, and a mixing board and a home-made sound
effects box. It was tha shit! No beat-matching involved, but the
music (mostly old-school reggae and dub) and improvised dub effects
were outstanding. So I just don't buy the notion that the medium,
whether it be tapes or CDs or good ol' vinyl, has any bearing on the
success of a set. Beat-matching of hip hop or house or techno can
definitely ENHANCE a DJ set, but I think anyone who feels they have
to beat-match their entire set should seriously think about expanding
their musical palette to include a broader range of music.
