Dirk and all.

I've been playing/listening to this music for years, but have only recently
become really serious about DJing. I've spent a LOT of time practicing
beatmixing. It's important (I think) to have the skill. In my opinion, if
you can't beatmix, you're not a DJ.
That said, I also think there's a balance between mixing and "blending."
Now that I've gotten better at beatmixing records, I'm pulling back and
doing it when it suits the songs being mixed. If they sound good playing
over each other - GREAT. There's nothing like moving that crossfader over
and getting that mix. But I don't want to be a slave to the BPMs of my
records and only play something because it mixes well.
This music is all over the spectrum in terms of BPMs. To try and beatmix
everything would be futile and LIMITING.
I think the Thievery Corp. mix CD on Studio K7! is a great case in point.
It's not beatmixed (maybe a couple tracks), but the mix OVERALL is
definately smooth and has a consistant vibe.
