Keyser & Shuriken - newsletter #17: The Loneliness of Tunnels

(Brought to you weekly with the kind support of Jah, the almighty and the evil Gorilla.)

    Newsflash 13.04.2000

    Dear friends,

Last week was an excellent one for Keyser & Shuriken, but full of stress for Tibor and Gabor (our alteregos in the real world). While we were djing a lot and got positive feedbacks, we also had to deal with a lot of annoying things (writing diploma, studying for exams, working, moving out from flat etc.). Hey, we stop complaining right now. :-)

We got a request from our friends from Vienna (Hannes & Flow from Twentysomething Tunes - respect!) to make a couple of remixes. Gabor (Shuriken) prepares for real life (writes his diploma), so Keyser had to find another mates. Finally Keyser have teamed up with Mister Tristam Shandy (Ambrus Tovishazi) and Peat & Peet (Peter Erdelyi) to make some groovy remixes. Our joint project is called Matine Choco, and we hope you can hear some fine sounds from our labs very soon.

In last week's show at Tilos Radio there was full house: our guests were Bodoo and Negro, and also the host djs - Lee'n'gum, Shuriken and Keyser - were playing some goodies for our dear listeners. To the Astro Jazz Lounge (our Sunday evening club event) last weekend we invited Badihali, an old-timer funksoulbrother of our messy metropolis. He showed to all of us, what raw funk and rare groove is really about.

This week's rather short reading for those who are about to get enough:

"'I love the loneliness of the tunnels.' Brenda says softly. 'It seeps through your ears and skin. It's like a hug with nothing to hold you. It's an understanding.'"

Brenda is one of the several thousand homeless people who live in the tunnel system under New York. There are seven or eight levels of tunnels (train and underground tracks, sewers...) under Manhattan. The deeper you go - to protect yourself from the cruel world: crack addicts, wicked ghetto kids who try to set you on fire for example while you're asleep - the freakier communities of so called "mole people" you see. The quote above is from The Mole People, a book by Jennifer Toth, a journalist student at the Columbia University. She dared to go under and spent most of his time with tunnel dwellers in many months to give us a clear picture of what this living hell is like.

Keep on floating on the highest level till the next week!
