    Keyser & Shuriken - Newsletter #9

(Brought to you weekly with the kind support of Jah, the almighty and the evil Gorilla.)

    Newsflash 07.02.2000

    Dear friends,

If our last dj gig at Pecs was fun, Saturday night at was pure sonic pleasure! We (Keyser, Shuriken & Lee'n'Gum) had the opportunity to play warm-up for Jürgen von Knoblauch of Jazzanova. It was the first time we (K&S) played for such a huge audience, but it seems (old and new) jazz works in such big halls just as fine as in small clubs now. Jürgens amazing three hours long set was rocking the walls! This night meant a lot for the people involved with the new jazz scene of Budapest.

On Sunday we hanged out with Jürgen - a really nice guy - and have even managed to find some Hungarian vinyl goodies at the flea market. He told us that he had heard Rainer Trüby playing Shuriken's track (Psyked Up Muzak) in Switzerland. Trüby got our demo CD in Vienna at dZihan & Kamien's release party to listen to it and tell his opinion on our music. We never thought he would play it, and we are really glad that people around the world get to hear the music cooked up in our home studio. :)

Sometimes things go a lot better than you expect it:

"See, I'd asked wild Bill Davis how long it'd take me to learn organ. He told me it'd take fifteen years alone to learn the pedals. Fifteen years! I'd have a fucking beard! I was playing opposite hime in the same club months after that!

He felt bad, bad, baaaad. 'Git this young muthafucker away from me!' I was playing that Oklahoma funk that I got from Charlie Christian. That POW! That POP! That PUNCH! Charlie played all down notes and it gives that impact like a horn. I'm not a keyboardist - I'm a horn player. I'm a voice."

    - Funky hammond organ maestro Jimmy Smith. Spotted in A Century of Jazz.

Keep on playin the pedals (or whatever grabs your attention) till next week!
