Keyser & Shuriken - Newsletter #5

(Brought to you weekly with the kind support of Jah, the almighty and the evil Gorilla.)

Newsflash 10.01.2000

Dear friends,

Finally we're all trough the trying times of the millennium craze and got ourselves together for this years' first newsletter. In Budapest things are looking good indeed: our club nights at Suss Fel Nap are going strong and it seems that have we finally reached a point where our club audience are happy to dance to whatever we play from latin jazz to smooth grooves at 100-110 BPM - and they've stopped demanding banging big beat tunes. Last Friday we've also played at Tilos Radio's club (Club FM 98) with Lee N Gum and got really great response (we brought in the largest crowd since the opening of Tilos Club, even though it might have been because there wasn't much going on that evening elsewhere).

In this new year we start bringing foreign artists to Budapest. If everything goes well the our first big event's gonna take place in February with such fabulous guest DJs as dZihan&Kamien from Vienna. We will also start to invite Hungarian guest DJs to our club night (local big names like Palotai and Titusz) who usually don't really get to play their rarest grooves at big events. Now they will have a chance to introduce the gems of their record collections in exclusive sets.

In the radio this week we had one of our premium vinyl supplier as guest. DJ Negro just started running a record store called Deep Music Depo that sells deep house, downtempo, latinfunk and breakbeat selected with fine taste.

We spent last night at the I&I studios recording some cello for our remix of Kispal es a Borz - Mar delutan. Albert Markos - also member of the contemporary electronic jazz project Budbudas - played some really good grooves and with that we finally seem to have come close to finishing the track. (By the end of this week it will be done. Let us know if you have the bandwith and the curiosity to get the track in mp3 in e-mail or other way.) By the way, if you are patient, you can download a mix by Keyser at the site of the internet radio Para (http://www.c3.hu/para/docs/ParaRadio_presents_DJ_Keyser.mp3)

And finally this weeks' fine reading (now about chimps):

"[.]The ultimate problem of the future was the conflict between the right to pleasure - 'orgasms' - and social responsibility. Ours was not a movement of protest, apparently, but celebration, which 'caused envy and created enemies'. The key attitude was Pleasure Now. 'If our ideas are quashed in the future' - Sharp recited with relish - 'we can look back on the ball we had now.' His hair shimmered in the sunlight, he was Moses reading from the tablets.

'Wow'. Giggles floated from the bed. The twins had become quads, no, sextuplets, lying in each other's arms, flecked with petal, nibbling at each other's ear-lobes. Bob Whitaker bounded from the dark room whith a pile of twin-prints and dumped them on the desk - why did he look like a chimp? I felt chump. Sharp handed me the Underground paper, pointing to a para, the words springing to life as a singing telegram: 'The new thing is people just coming together and grooving. If you don't know what grooving is then you haven't understood what's going on.' My heart was racing. I muttered, 'Strawberry Fields Forever'. The walls of the studio started to breathe, inflate, shrink, along with the pop-surrealist artworks. Everything roared. Finally it hit me.

'WHAT DIDYA PUT IN MY TEA?'."

Richard Neville (editor of the infamous OZ 'zine of the hippie era) - Hippie Hippie Shake p.87.

C'ya,
