It's to simple to say that signing with w major label is "taking the easy way out": you encounter so much bureaucracy that has nothing to do with your music; you subject yourself and your music to the whims of the executives, and to the dictates of their quarterly projections to pacify their shareholders. Basically, you bank on their ability to force your music on others, out of fear that without that leverage you'd languish. Very few people really "win" in the music industry, and those who do, I bet you, it's because they withstood a lot of battery and bruises to get there.

I am not a huge Courtney Love fan, but I tell you I am a huge Prince fan: not only do I love his music, but I love how he has thrown his middle finger up at Warner Brothers, gotten out of his prior deal (which admittedly allowed him to become popular), has gotten control of his recording, and distributes his records (for which there is a demand) however HE damn well pleases. More artists need to break from conventional record deals once they have the leverage so to do, and you will see that record label paradigm have a major shift. so let Courtney Love rant all see wants... maybe she is helping the next wave of artists attain some equilibirum between exposure and economic/artistci freedom; who knows?
