Keyser & Shuriken - newsletter #13: Rhythm in the air

(Brought to you weekly with the kind support of Jah, the almighty and the evil Gorilla.)

    Newsflash 17.03.2000

    Dear friends,

It was a quiet week here in Budapest: better to say, there were a lot of events in the city but nothing special happened with our little gang. Shuriken went skiing, so Keyser did the radio program on Sunday morning with the friendly help of DJ Palotai - the doyen of Budapest djs - and DJ Negro again. At our regular Sunday-night club event, Astro Jazz Lounge at Suss Fel Nap, our guest this week was DJ Mikusz, who comes from a Hungarian town called Szekesfehervar. He is an old-time jazz-head who doesn't spin much nowadays, but he showed us he is still on top.

This week's reading is a nice little story about keeping our own sense of reality:

"I had temple blocks and a stick with a black string on it to the ceiling" - said Art [Blakey] in talking about his early playing days. "I was playing the Ritz in Pittsburgh, and I wasn't playing drums, I was twirling sticks, and I'd say "barn" and throw the stick out, and the people would say aaaah, and it'd come back and I'd catch it. Big Deal.

Chick Webb came in to hear me, and he said, "You're a drummer, kid?" And I said, "Yeah." He said, "Bring your drums in the dressing room." So I brought my drum in there; he said, "Roll". I said, "Ra-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta." He said "---", slammed the door and walked out. I said, "Mr. Webb..." He said, "Look, the rhythm is on the drum - it ain't in the air".

/Art Blakey in Down Beat, March 1964/

Keep on feeling the rhythm - on the drum, in the air, everywhere - till next week!
