Great list of 60's stuff. Some more great records, mainly in a
bugalú mode, but w/plenty of jazz sprinkled round:
_60s Gold_ (great Fania comp)
Ray Barretto _Acid_, _The Other Road_, _Together_, all his stuff!!
Tito Puente _El Rey Bravo_
Johnny Colon y Su Orchestra _Boogaloo Blues_
King Nando _Shing-a-Ling with K.N. and his Orchestra_
Cortijo _Cortijo & His Time Machine/y su Maquina del Tiempo_
Sabu Martinez _Afro Temple_
The Latinaires _Camel Walk_
Orchestra Harlow _El Exigente_, _Me & My Monkey/Mi Mono y Yo_
Pete Rodriguez y su Conjunto _Latin Boogaloo_
Machito _Asia Minor_
Bobby Valentin _Let's Turn On/Arrebatarnos_
Ricardo Rey _Se Solto/On the Loose_
Hector Rivera _At the Party w/H.R._
And most especially, anything at all by Eddie Palmieri-- the Tico
stuff is *all* amazing. The following stretch of albums:
Justicia
Super Imposition
Harlem River Drive
At the University of Puerto Rico
Sentido
The Sun of Latin Music
Unfinished Masterpiece
Vamonos Pa'l Monte
Lucumi, Macumba, Voodoo
Is one of the greatest creative runs in latin music, in jazz music,
in music music PERIOD. Utter genius, esp. in the middle there.
For newer stuff, I really like Jimmy Bosch, & I've got a really
smoking live benefit album called _Jammin in the Bronx_ which
highlights a lot of strong newer players, but I'm not as strong on my
latin music outside of the 60s-70s period. Would love to hear some
recommendations!
