Crate Soul Brothers newsletter #73: Reunited we stand (but where is the Gorilla?)

    Newsflash 19.12.2001

    Dear friends,

Reunited we stand stronger than ever. No more need to write separate reports. It's
only Budapest, baby, for the next three weeks. The Gorilla army is now ready to
    drop the lyrical science.

First of all we grab our chances to wish a Merry Christmas to all our friends
worldwide. Unfortunately Shuriken couldn't wave goodbye to his boys and girls in
London, having left his mobile phone in the "pre-return to planet apes" rush. He's
not rude, he just don't have your phone numbers, so please send it to him again,
so that he has everything he needs (access to your funny and loving personalities)
by the time he gets back (the 11th of January).

Before leaving, Shuriken witnessed the Big Chill's winter event, with - among
many - his main man, Yonderboi behind the dex, the Pranksters's Ubiquity Showcase
and the Mouseorgan showdown, plus Bite Your Granny presented by Nik Weston (and
every now and then Alan Brown) at point 101 Bar, a nice place to bug out sippin on
cranberry juices on any Thursday night. Not to forget the perfect night out, Mr
King Britt + the Attica Blues boys teaching a deep lesson on London's best
speakers (at Plastic People, you dummy). Thanks to Ade for making it all happen.
Watch out for his bad one on New Year's Eve, the only thing that makes me sad
about leaving London for the Holidays. Much love 2 many people I already miss: the
Kerleta family, Dom, Lucy, "Tough-On-The-Roll" Johnny, Pete Yak, Nigel, Big Gav,
the Zero dB bwoyz, Alan, Anna & Reka, Richard, Miriam, Vesa, Sampsa, Rune, Snorre,
Eivind, Nik, Felix, Simbad & his French connections at Key Recordings (The Twitch
12" is BIG in Budapest), Helen, Tom Szirtes (he is Shur-I-Kan, I am dj Shuriken,
remember it, for once and all), Jimpster, and my extended family at Nu X: Dominic,
Javi, Laura, Krisztina, Patsy & Zoe.

This week's reading is hijacked from Shuriken's college reading list. Just to give
you an idea of how he gets an academic understanding of the newsletter biz in a
really big city. Before getting all excited, remember the words of Public Enemy,
not all is gold that is hyped:

"In a city where production focuses on the media, the stock market and frequent
changes of design, the medium that creates value is 'buzz'. Buzz is comprised of
publicity, gossip and anticipation; it increases the value of anything and anyone
that can be linked to the critical nexus creativity and profit. In part, the
importance of buzz reflects the priority that has been placed since the late
nineteenth century on the commercial applications of technical innovation. Partly,
too, buzz reflects the importance of media - newspapers, glossy magazines, cable
television, websites and chat rooms - in diffusing knowledge about commodities and
celebrities. While these aspects are important to both financial investors and
cultural consumers, buzz also plays a key role in the careers of cultural
producers. Buzz intensifies the tendency to organise credentials in terms of
'portfolios' that telescope the producers' track records for creativity - a
tendency that began with visual artists and culture industries in the 1960s.
Moreover buzz is a medium of communication among the interconnected networks of
cultural producers, employers, clients and patrons who circulate among the city's
consumption spaces, media spaces and cultural institutions."

From the contribution of Sharon Zunkin to Tate Gallery 'Century City: Art and
Culture in the Modern Metropolis'. London: Tate Modern, 2000.

Nobody started complaining yet about the length of our newsletters recently, but
we cut it shorter this time, only grabbing your attention to finally mention the
forth coming Keyser & Shuriken dates (all of them sure shots) in Budapest (two
great friends, Tom Wieland of Les Gammas fame, and big time granny biter Alan
Brown spin with us in two otta three dates, fellow Kristalykert dj,
friend-almost-family Leengum definitely hits the spot at the 3rd and places by the
end of this list). Make sure to get there to feel the Crate Soul Pressure!

Keep on buzzin till next week!
