Modern hip hop has developed a pension for glorifying the pursuits of short term grandeur with lyrics revolving around "Lexus'", "Bitches" and "Benjamins." This trend along with the "Puffy Syndrome" of rapping over classic disco and funk tracks has forced many genre purists to look elsewhere for their urban inspired music. All hope is not lost though as there still is a community of artists who represent the true essence of hip hop, combining intelligent, thought provoking lyrics over dope beats. One such group is Dead Prez, whose lyrics address issues of racism, classism, education, poverty and African American solidarity much in the spirit of genre pioneers Public Enemy and KRS-One. Tonight, Dead Prez brings their rally-like, highly energetic live show to the underground vibe of Lyricist Lounge — a showcase for up and coming MCs and DJs who are looking to join the ranks of the hip hop promised land with a record deal.
