From what I hear, you're best to stick with the Pioneer
line of CD players. They've basically set the standard by
which others are judged (but I hear American DJ's newest
pro-scratch 1 is also very good player). I'm mostly a vinyl
guy, but I've recently been playing with a CD DJ who uses
Pioneer CDJ-100S's (along with their DJM-300s mixer), and
had a chance to fool around with 'em. I was really
impressed - almost to the point of starting to question my
allegiance to unweildy slabs of wax (almost). At any rate,
the CDJ-100S is Pioneer's performance (ie: value) line of
players and are way more reasonably priced, leaving you a
bit of money to buy a proper mixer, which is far more
versatile, and would allow you to add more parts as you
needed/wanted them (turntables, mic, effects, etc). Also,
the built-in effects are a good way to mask a really sloppy
mix ;) . Personnally, I prefer the table top units to
rack-mounted stuff - the feel is closer to turntables.
Ultimately, I think you get what you pay for. The
expensive, high-cachet equipment (technics 1200's, vestax
battle mixers, pioneer cd players) tend to retain value far
better, so if you decide that you don't want the equipment
anymore, you can resell it at a really good rate.

I've recently been shopping for a new mixer, and one of the
stores I visited suggested I drop by with some wax and
spend a few hours trying out various mixers (incidently,
they also had the best service, least attitude, and best
prices. How cool is that?!). If there's a shop nearby
which would let you do the same, I would highly advise you
    to do so.

    My $.02
