Yeah, i'm in total agreement with you on this one. "Latin"
as a musical term is fairly broad, but at the same time,
not all inclusive. I was recently trying to verbalize the
sound of the Nortec Collective album, "Tijuana Sessions" to
someone. While it is latin, in the sense that it comes
from latin america, it certainly doesn't fall into the
spectrum of what is normally associated here with "latin"
music. But I do love that norteno sound - the skins on
those snares are so tight, so tinny!

Anyways, the same could also be said of some Brazilian
music (the more afro-centric stuff) and most tradition
aboriginal music from south america. I've had the chance
to listen to a few "world music" compilations (one from
Peru seems to stick out in my mind but I can't remember the
title), and they certainly don't have that traditional
"latin" sound even though they're latin. For me, it's
kinda like the whole acid jazz discussion we just had. I
seem to know whether or not the music should be described
as 'latin', but i can't really say why...
