I've been reading about the enigma known as 4 Tet (23 yr. old Kierian Hebden, sp?) for about 1.5 years now, but only now am I getting to hear his music. Could he possibly meet the hype? My reaction, after all the buildup?

Wow, it's hot. I like this even better than Hefner's Residue. Not generally for the dancefloor, but this is some moody, relaxing, and ultimately uplifting, new jazz.

Especially interesting was the piece on him in Future Music mag. His music production rig is definitely constructed on the less is more philosophy; he does it all on a single PC running Cakewalk. One quote I remember from him was, "Next time you come 'round, I'll just be sitting here mixing my next album on my palm pilot." Pretty astonishing when you consider how thoroughlly layered it all is.

Another hot tip that I tracked down after seeing it in the "Ursuala Rucker" issue of Straight No Chaser; Asheru and Blue Black of the Unspoken Herd, Soon Come. Really, really good. You miss your Digable Planets? You want your Tribe Called Quest back? You love jazzy Roots joints like "Dynamite?" Then pick this one up; great beats and production (on the J Rawls acoustic bass-ride cymbal-but still funky as hell- tip) deep lyrics (from the spiritual to the humerous and back again in no time flat), and some fun party jams. Highly Recommended!
