STYLIN - Rare grooves, hi-tech jazz and other worldly fusions
Friday afternoons 12-2pm RRR 102.7FM, Melbourne
Live online - http://www.rrr.org.au/index2.html (see below for times)

    Hello Stylin friends

It was another good Friday on Stylin, not least because of a fine mix
provided by our Frankfurt connection, Michael Rutten. A fabulous selector
who's getting down on the production side too. His Soulpatrol remix of Peace
Orchestra was another fine blend of future jazz beats and melodic
percussion. And speaking of blends, my jaw dropped at the way he put Albert
Ayler and As One together. Michael is also responsible for one of my
favourite compilation series - Tribes (formerly Tribes of da Underground) on
Infracom. Volume 7 should be out very soon and it looks like he's put on
that Defcon 5 track I've been chasing, alongside other nice bits by the
likes of Swell Session and Donnie.

It was a slightly nostalgic Trainspotters' Corner - I think Grover
Washington Jr's "Mr Magic" album was one of the first jazz records I ever
bought (back in my early teens). In those days it was all about hip hop and
looking for samples and I did actually put bits of the track "Black Frost"
into the sampler for my Code of Ethics group with MC Pluto. Not the same
part used by RJD2 for "Here's What's Left", though. A beautiful cut up of
the horns for such a soulful track.

Finally I got to successfully play my re-edit of Offcutts' "Gravel Rash". A
great downtempo number with strings of yesteryear and a nice rich vocal from
Manas Pandey. Curiously, Manas used to work in the same office as me and I
remember him stealing the show at the firm's karaoke competition with a
scorching rendition of Prince's "Kiss"! Offcutts' bassist Yoshi has recently
returned to Tokyo, but hopefully we'll get him back here soon.

And at last the Frances Tang & Plutonic Lab collaboration is ready to drop.
Other-worldly spoken word from Frances meets some stark hip hop and drum and
bass soundscapes. Keep an eye on http://listen.to/plutoniclab for release
details. A launch party in Melbourne is in the pipeline too.

No guests this Friday - just me trying to get through mountains of new
    music!

    until then
    Ennio Styles
