STYLIN - Rare grooves, hi-tech jazz and other worldly fusions
Friday afternoons 12-2pm RRR 102.7FM, Melbourne
Live online - http://www.rrr.org.au/index2.html (see below for times)

    Hello all

No guest last week allowed me to get through some of my backlog of new music
    - but of course even 2 hours is never enough. Great to get some nice
Australian music in though. The Julie Anne Evans tune was produced by
Melbourne's talented Julian Lodge, who reportedly has more of this future
soul stuff up his sleeve. I'll be on his case about it. Meanwhile, you can
hear this on the latest D'Influence album, D'Vas on English label Dome.

Also music from Brisbane's Yoshi, who was introduced to me by previous
Stylin guest Dean Smith. Yoshi has had music out on DIY's last Serve Chilled
compilation, but the track Unreality is unreleased. An eerie blend of wonky
hip hop beats and strangely melodic space noises. It seems Yoshi will be
moving to Melbourne soon (coz this is where it's at!)

Finally we had a tune from Playground, a collaboration between Melbourne DJ
Lazyboy and a collective of jazz musicians. The live/programmed combination
of Tunis Cake comes off like Melbourne's answer to Zero DB, one of my
favourite production crews at the moment. Lazyboy and Playground should be
joining me on Stylin before too long.

Trainspotters' Corner looked into the source of Fantastic Plastic Machine's
Petitions, a very catchy disco house tune from 2000, which came out on the
Sakura Hills Disco 2000 compilation put together by Japan's Shinichi Osawa
(of Mondo Grosso fame). I originally bought this comp because it was the
only way to get Kyoto Jazz Massive's Substream long before Compost put it
out. The FPM track was a bonus, which I'm still playing. Anyway the rhodes
sample and part of the lyrics/melody come from a cosmic disco number called
Carry On Turn Me On by Space, originally released in 1977. It's now out as
part of Faze Action's Abstract Funk Theory compilation, which has lots of
nice spacey disco (and plenty of trainspotter fodder).

This week tune in for a great guest mix from Brooklyn's Wayne Pate, giving
you the Down Low with plenty of latin flavour, old and new.

    until then
    Ennio Styles
