Crate Soul Brothers newsletter #97: Loud on the mike

    Newsflash 17. December 2002

    Dear friends,

We had a nice but exhausting weekend in Austria on the previous week: three gigs in three nights. It would have been an easy exercise for any professional dj, but sometimes life is just different from what you expect. It can be frustrating when you escape from your daily job only to play music for hairdressers who don't really care about anything but their own haircut. But let's not hurry things, we'll start right from the beginning.

Last Friday we arrived in the late afternoon to Vienna where there was already bloody cold so we decided not to run to the record stores but stayed at the café we later played on that night and drunk some warming punches. We were invited by Martin aka dj Gajol (one half of UKO) and Didi Schaerf the hardest working promoter in V-city. Unfortunately the freezing weather kept most people home but we still had a splendid night. Thanks to all of you who came to see us (Uncle Tom, Cukipapa, Oliver K, Menu B, Alex D & Isabelle, Kami & co.).

Next evening we played in Graz which could have been a nice evening too if the venue is not full with a bunch of hairdressers of Toni & Guy network ("the hairdressers' McDonald's"). We never had such an experience that none of our audience were even head nodding during the evening to the music we played. We still try to forget those faces.

On the following day we hung with out the one and only Tom Wieland who is not only one of our favourite djs on the globe but a man who somehow has a traditional Hungarian attitude ("guys, you still have a plenty of time!" :). Sunday night we played on one of the best known clubnights of Vienna called Soul Sugar. Thanks for everybody who came to check us out and much regards to Ziggy, Andy (Aromabar), Christian Davidek, Cukipapa (again!), Martin (again and again), Amanda and his friend.

This weekend we had an old friend, dj, giant pant sales man and mouse-organist in town. Dom "Allo Love" Servini from London has rocked the audience at our monthly night at Kultiplex. Dom was one of the most caring brothers when I (Shuriken) was down and out in London. His rocking records and turntable talents have been an inspiration for me throughout that year and finally my Hungarian friends could see why. His set will be soon uploaded the Tilos server. Until then, you can listen to a 30 mins he did for Tilos Radio here: (http://tilos.hu/mp3/96/Saturday/2230.m3u). You can also subscribe to Dom's newsletter (speedyservini@hotmail.com), which is always fun to read besides being an important source of information about exciting new bits.

As we had problems with the management of Kultiplex, our monthly Crate Soul Pressure nights will soon move to a new venue. To get a flavour of the proper way of dealing with nasty club owners, listen in the stage conversation of jazz giants:

    - When are you motherfuckers going to stop talking and start playing, instead of just Dodo and Stan over there jacking off?
    - Miles, you are so vulgar.
    - I want to hear Bird blow, not this dumb-ass conversation.
    - So gone. One, two, three, four.
    - Yeah, Bird. Play, baby! Go, man.
    - Hooray!
    - Ladies and gentleman, will you please all shut up and listen to this motherfucker blowing!
    - Miles! Careful, man, you can't say that.
    - Schitt, man, I put my hand over the mike on 'motherfucker'. Remember Monk calling the club owner in Detroit a motherfucker seven times on the mike 'cause he didn't have a good piano?
    - He had it next night though. If he'd called him 'sir' he'd of had the same old clunker.'

Taken from Beneath the Underdog, the autobiography of Charles Mingus.

Keep on being loud on the mike until next week!
