Crate Soul Brothers newsletter #77: How fine it is to be loved

    Newsflash 21.02.2002

    Dear friends,

if you are living in Austria or around, you can check out tonight a special one-hour Crate Soul Brothers mix in Werner 'Godfather' Geier's Rough Mix show on FM4 radio station (http://fm4.orf.at/station/76569/main). We are glad to have the opportunity to spread the vibes over there in Austria. This weekend there will be another chance to make the Vienna-Budapest connection: here in Budapest, at the La Ventura me Keyser will play along with Darcosan (Vienna Scientists) and DJ Shalom (Mouth to Mouth) while the band called Café Drechsler will present a live jazz session (if they are at least so good as the real Café Drechsler at Vienna's Naschmarkt, we can't go wrong!).

Yesterday our third Crate Soul Brother Ambi did a great concert with his weird ethno-pop-electronica band called Amorf Ordogok at our recent favourite club Rigoletto then Pedro the vinylist played the hottest records in town for the rest of the night (http://www.odyssey.rigoletto.hu). Respect guys!

For those who live in Hungary and can see the Filmmuzeum television channel there's some offering. So far I only knew that in the early seventies Gabor Szabo, the world-famous Hungarian guitarist cam back to his motherland to record a session at the national radio with some of the best Hungarian jazz players (see: http://www.dougpayne.com/jazzpod.htm). A few days ago I was shocked when browsing trough the television channels I saw Szabo playing on the TV screen. So I had to realise that there was also a television programme recorded back then. The channel broadcasts this gem quite frequently so check it out while you can!

    Shuriken's London bitz:

Last week I had a chance to catch Anima Sound System playing live at Cargo, London. This Hungarian band, fusing electronic beats with our folk music heritage with an attitude that is much closer to Asian Dub Foundation than Deep Forest. They are true pioneers of our scene as we have mentioned in earlier newsletters: first to produce a full length underground dance music album and first to tour live in Hungary. With this gig, they were the firs band from the Hungarian electronic scene to make a live appearance in London, and they truely rocked a packed Cargo. Absolutely impressive. Thanks for the band for treating me as family and letting me have such a good time with them. Thanks to Jonathan and his crew for bringing these guys to the UK.

A test pressing of Carmel's Nujazzkiller (formerly known as Marcel's Nujazzkilla) also hit my mailbox in the last weeks. Nice to have finally a vinyl copy of the tune that rocked crowds and got djs trainspotting wherever we played the CD-R version. Nuff respect for the Fluid Ounce mob for making it happen. Ooops, new sick beats on the flipside. Twisted pieces of new jazz worth killing for.

This week's reading goes out to those who get easily depressed by current the state of the world. There is music that makes life feel wonderful:

"And I think that ever since I began to play, I have thought that music should make people look within themselves and think about the meaning of life. That it should make them think about how fine it is to be loved or to love another; that it should make them think about how really insignificant we are and at the same time how important each of us is on this earth we live on and in this universe that our earth goes spinning through. So close your eyes and let our music speak to you in colors and sounds familiar and not so familiar emotions and let it tell you how much all the three of us love to be alive and love to talk about being alive in our music."

Ramsey Lewis, liner notes to The Ramsey Lewis Trio's Upendo Ni Pamoja album. A deeply touching record indeed.

Keep on looking within yourselves till next week!
