    Best of 2001: Part One

Viewed from a musical perspective, 2001 was an incredible year. There
was absolutely no shortage of quality sounds, at least from where I was
sitting and listening. Producers continued to incorporate far more live
musicians and vocalists into the mix. Bands continued to explore and
erase the lines between traditional live sounds and dance club
musics/spaces. Toronto artists as diverse as Nick Holder, Manitoba and
Moonstarr made major international inroads. Herbert blew my, and many
other, minds with his stunningly beautiful Bodily Functions album. And,
most of all, new sounds exploded all around us, with examples of pure
talent and forward-looking artistry leading the way. For every 4hero,
Four Tet, Numbers and Block 16 who made my year a far more rich one,
there are undoubtedly a number of others who did the same for you.

That said, these two ‘Best of’ lists are highly subjective, far from
all-inclusive, and are simply based upon releases that made me happy to
be alive and doing what I do. These are also amongst the most played
tracks/releases on Mental Chatter in 2001. Many of them brought in phone
calls and emails galore as listeners also fell in love. I hope you enjoy
the list, and perhaps discover a few new gems for your own collections.
Keep your ears, hearts and minds open. Thanks for listening. And a
message to the producers, musicians and labels on this list: thank-you
    for the inspiration.
