Hey Pace,
I hear you when you say that "The Downward Spiral" was a weak record. A few
great singles, including the aforementioned "Hurt" that Johnny Cash does so
much justice to, but the record really disappointed me as a whole.
Don't let that deter you from buying later NIN, however, as the majority of
it is really strong. Trent Reznor released an E.P. during the "Downward
Spiral" period, called "Further Down The Spiral". This record rocked my
world when it came out about 8 years ago, and it still rocks my world. Back
then, it was the most evil-sounding industrial music I had ever heard, very
similar to the soundtrack he did for the Quake video game, but far more
sinister sounding. Also, his last studio record, "Fragile" is a damn good
double cd AND has some kick-ass, intense-sounding singles to boot!! He also
put out some material for the excellent "Lost Highway" soundtrack, which
also featured Bowie, Lou Reed, Smashing Pumpkins, and soundtrack
maestro-extraordinaire Angelo Badalamenti. That's a fairly comprehensive
listing of worthwhile NIN. Unless you're a big fan, you may wanna keep away
from the recent double-live disc that was released. Good, but far from
essential.
