As we mentioned last time, we've got a special mix from Tru Thoughts
recording artist Jon Kennedy to spin for you this week. "Discovered"
by Mr. Scruff, Jon's has to date, released three 12" singles and a
full album entitled, "We're Just Waiting For You Now." In addition to
playing drums and guitar, Jon is a resident DJ at Tru Thoughts'
"Phonic Hoop" night in Brighton and also plays out at additional
residencies in Manchester and London. More info is available on his
Website: http://web.ukonline.co.uk/jon.kennedy/.
As Jon's set will be about half the show, here are some of the
releases we may or may not get to this week:
Nightmares On Wax: "Mind Elevation" - A curious mix of several
outstanding pop tunes and a few very bland instrumentals. There is
some real potential for a crossover hit here, but the album could
have lost about 25% worth of its material and been much stronger all
'round.
King Britt Presents: The Philadelphia Experiment Remixed - I'm losing
count of the number of albums and singles the King has had his hands
on this year and this is one of the best. Utilizing the talents of
Charlie Dark, Oba Funke, Vikter Dupaix and others, Britt fashions a
nice, floor-friendly complement to the original, jazzy Philadelphia
Experiment CD.
Yesterday's New Quintet: "Stevie Vol.1" - Originally created as a
promotional item, YNQ's tribute to Stevie Wonder is a joy to listen
to. Produced, arranged and mixed by Madlib, this is an
organic-sounding disc that appears to have been recorded using
minimal overdubs, if any. This album was manufactured in limited
quantities, so you might want to check the Stones Throw site for
availability
(http://www.stonesthrow.com/news/stevie/aug02_offer.html).
V/A: "Peanut Butter Wolf's Jukebox 45's" - Yet another outstanding
Stones Throw release, this collection brings together 22 tracks from
the ST 7" Jukebox 45 series. The usual suspects and labelmates
appear, along with a large posse of funky friends and acquaintances.
Available on CD or double vinyl.
Dissent: "Bleeding Together" - Back for their second release, Dissent
is the brainchild of Gregory Howe, founder of San Francisco's Wide
Hive Records. A most unique blend of jazz, soul and pop music,
"Bleeding..." features the guitar virtuosity of Calvin Keys,
Mission's Kat Ouano on keys, Nathalie Sanchez on vocals and a host of
great players to round out the roster. Due out either at the end of
September or end of October (depending on which press release you
read), we'll give you your first taste and it's delicious!
Next week, we're expecting the boys from Zero dB / Fluid Ounce to
stop by for an interview and guest DJ slot. If you haven't picked up
Ubiquity's domestic compilation, "Fluid Ounce Unmeasured," what are
you waiting for? A collection of all the labels' releases,
"....Unmeasured" demonstrates why these guys are some of the hottest
producers in the biz right now with their remixes for Rainer Truby,
Peace Orchestra, Sun Ra and of course, their original work. Run down
to your local music emporium or log on to the Ubiquity site and buy
it today!
That's it for this week.....ciao for now!
David
